Lunchtime Talks
Informal talks are given on a Wednesday in the gallery at 1.10pm for about 20 minutes. There is no need to book and places are not limited.

21 April
Mary Miers, Architectural Writer, Art and Books Editor for Country Life and author of The Western Seaboard will discuss and sign copies of her book.
5 May
Lucy Lyell will focus on one of the paintings in the current exhibition Highlands & Islands: Paintings and Poetry.

Drawing Class: Still Life with the Scottish Colourists SOLD OUT

Susanna Lyell, artist and tutor, will lead the workshop which is suitable for both beginners and experienced painters.

Taking inspiration from this wonderful exhibition of Scottish Colourists; Cadell, Fergusson, Hunter and Peploe, the drawing session will give us a chance to closely observe the paintings, look at line, tone and colour, and learn new techniques of drawing. There will be the opportunity to discuss the results of the session at the end of the day. All materials, tea & coffee will be provided.

The City of Westminster Archives Centre houses extensive collections relating to Westminster past and present, covering hundreds of years of history dating from 1256. Housed in an exceptional, purpose-built centre, the collection includes written and visual archival material, newspapers, maps, and original photographs, one of the best theatre collections in the U.K., parish registers and public records. These extremely diverse collections include valuable archives deposited by internationally renowned businesses such as Jaeger, Liberty, Gillow, Furniture makers, Watney Mann, Brewers.

An Evening of Scottish Music and Poetry

Drinks from 6pm with a chance to view the current collection in the gallery before a seated performance. The event will feature performances of Gaelic singing, music and poetry recitals by Hebridean and Highland artists, including Paul McCallum and Alexandra Jones, as well as a special performance by Little Sparta.

Art, Literature and the Highlands by Murdo Macdonald

Murdo Macdonald is author of the publication Scottish Art, Thames & Hudson, 2001 . He currently lectures at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and his main area of research is the history of Scottish art and ideas, in general and in an international context. A particular focus is on the period around 1900, notably work related to the thinking of Patrick Geddes.

Hebrides & Highlands: An Illustrated Architectural Tour by Mary Miers

Mary Miers is the Architectural Writer, Art and Books Editor for Country Life and author of The Western Seaboard. The Western Seaboard takes us beyond the familiar sounds and scenery of the West Highlands and Islands to uncover an extraordinary record of human settlement, from the earliest ‘terraced’ houses on the machair of Bronze Age Uist to Scots Baronial piles set amid semi-tropical gardens.

Paintings and Poetry: Day in Glasgow

Viewing of Pioneering Painters: The Glasgow Boys 1880 - 1900 exhibition at Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery, to which we have leant Melville’s Orange Market and Lavery’s Blue Hungarians. Guests take lunch independently then tour Aspects of Scottish Art at Hunterian Art Gallery with curator Anne Dulau. This will be followed by a rare opportunity to meet and view drawings by Sandy Moffat RSA (Head of Painting, Glasgow School of Art 1992-2005) and paintings by Eardley, Raeburn and MacTaggart at the Department of Scottish Literature, Glasgow University. Professor of Scottish Literature, Alan Riach, will give a poetry recital.

Tour of City and Guilds of London Art School during the 2010 Degree Show with visits to Mark Adlington’s Studio and Caroline Wiseman Modern and Originals

Established in 1879, City & Guilds of London Art School is one of the few remaining independent art schools in the country. It is known for its emphasis on crafts-based practice and for keeping the tradition of the artist-teacher alive.

Our visit offers a chance to see this year’s Graduate Show, with the possibility to join the School’s tutors for guided tours of the Fine Art, Conservation and Carving Departments.

We will visit private art dealer Caroline Wiseman and proceed to Mark Adlington’s studio (no disabled access). A former student of City and Guilds, Adlington travels extensively in search of the wildlife which has been his principal obsession since early childhood.
