The Rebirth of a Palace: Rediscovering the Unicorn Tapestries

Historic Scotland’s project to recreate Stirling Castle’s 16th century Royal Lodgings took ten years. Peter Buchanan will talk about this formidable undertaking, from the background archaeology and historical research to the quality craftsmanship required to present a vision of the finest renaissance interiors in Scotland. Caron Penney, Studio Director at West Dean Tapestry Studio, will talk about the research and making of the new Hunt of the Unicorn Tapestries.

Portland Gallery will be holding an Eardley exhibition this spring to celebrate the publication of a new book on the artist by Christopher Andreae. This also coincides with the gallery’s third Anne Redpath exhibition. Friends of The Fleming Collection have the opportunity to attend the Private View of the exhibitions and listen to a talk by Christopher Andreae on Eardley. Drinks will be served.

The Mystic Hunt of the Unicorn: Capturing Beauty

The Mystic Hunt of the Unicorn as an original tapestry remains as two small fragments. Katharine Swailes will trace how she has researched and created a new design informed by the recreation of the previous six tapestries from the series, while Sue Prichard will discuss the role of weaving in the representation of women.

Margaret Hunter at Art First

Margaret Hunter studied at the Glasgow School of Art (1981–85) and under Professor Georg Baselitz at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. She now lives and works in Berlin and Scotland. Friends of The Fleming Collection who attended last year’s trip to Berlin were lucky enough to enjoy the fantastic experience of a visit to Margaret’s studio on the outskirts of the city. Margaret has enjoyed a long relationship with Art First and this exhibition will include three new sculptures in wood and mixed media, paintings on panel and works on paper. Drinks will be served and Friends will enjoy a tour of the exhibition from an Art First Director. Works by Will Maclean will also be on show in the Project Space.
